Chapter VII:

Red Flags

“Rique, give me a call,” there was a long pause in the voice mail message, “as a matter of fact, I want to say I’m sorry. I’ve never been jealous like that before baby. I don’t know what came over me. Give me a call, it’s Niagara.”

The next morning Rique checked the voice mail messages on his cell phone; Niagara’s was the first. It didn’t succeed in making him feel any better about the commotion she caused. As a matter of fact, it made him more apprehensive. Rique listened to her ramble for a while then deleted the message and moved onto the next voice mail.

“Rique, this is Niagara again. I’ve called you about four times now. I know you’ve seen my number on your phone or at least got my message. When you get this give me a call. I need to talk to you.”

Once again, Rique shook his head, deleted the message, and listened to the next voice mail.

“I don’t know what or who was so important that you couldn’t pick up the fuckin’ phone after you got off of work. All I wanted to do was see you last night, and now I feel like you blame me for everything that went on. It’s like you’re abandoning me when I need you the most.”

Rique hung up the phone after listening to Niagara’s messages. He couldn’t believe that she still thought he wanted to see her after all of the craziness from the night before. He didn’t like her messages or tone and wondered what was up with her attitude. It was obvious that Niagara saw herself as the victim, but to him she was definitely the aggressor.

Rique left the club the previous night without saying anything else to Blaque’, so he decided to skip the last two messages because he knew that they were from her. There was so much that was going on between them that he wanted to think before speaking to her again. Recently, on several occasions, Rique had been propositioned more vigorously than usual at the club. A lot of women and even a few men appeared to expect something more than a dance; one woman even asked who she needed to speak with for a little time with him. Rique always joked with his sister about her pimp-like attitude with men, but it was hard for him to fathom that she would actually do it. It did inspire him to write in his journal though:
